The charming and popular FDR had not been in any serious relationships with girls until he met Eleanor. In 1903, 21-year-old FDR asked Eleanor to marry him. The only thing that might help FDR feel better was hot baths. Under water, FDR would be able to possibly coax a little movement from his lower body. Though the specialist could not predict how severe the long-term effects would be, he did say that patients’ progress depended on their outlook and determination.
