The pause seemed to stretch for ever. Dana wondered at her ability to just sit there waiting. There was no telling what Mark was thinking because his face was totally without expression. He just sat looking at her with cold blue eyes. 'I believe you,' he said at length. 'Which doesn't seem to give me much choice. ' For a brief, fleeting moment Dana regretted starting this, but only for a moment. Whatever it cost him to admit the truth, it was no more than he deserved. 'I have very good teachers,' she rejoined.

My father found our marriage alone difficult enough to accept. There's no way I'm going to take even the slightest risk of having him learn that things aren't quite what he took them to be. So, tonight we share a room. A room, I said, not a bed. ' She did so, turning without a word to cross the narrow landing into the other room and lay the garments on the bed. They would have to be hung away later, she thought numbly. Right now it was only necessary that they leave a clear room for their visitors.

There was one bed in her room, and only one. Did he really think she was going to share it with him under these circumstances? Why take it for granted that Cathy and Ian had any right to a bed of their own anyhow? The way they lived was their own affair, but that didn't mean one had to condone it. Mark came back before she could bring herself to §tart obeying his instruction. He made no comment, simply taking her by the elbow and drawing her into the bedroom he had occupied the previous night. It was the same size as her own, with the double bed covered by a very similar patchwork quilt.
