This idea became clear in Delpit’s (1995) work as well as my own (Milner, Husband, & Jackson, 2002). During class discussions, for instance, these reactions may become quite apparent, perhaps because the perspectives of African Americans students about diversity often counter those of the White “majority” view. These feelings of disvalue and disrespect often result in African American students becoming discouraged and anxious. Clearly, African American students bring a wealth of “theory” and “knowing” to discussions by virtue of their experience, yet these qualities can be circumvented by others’ negative actions suggesting disvalue and disrespect— particularly when the African American graduate student perceptions concern other African Americans.

(p. 405) What researchers and campus-based officials are realizing is that students are empowered not only by their successes in the classroom but also by their successes beyond it. For the African American collegian, this process is no different. Unfortunately, what many students of color experience on predominantly White campuses is a lack of success or a lack of integration between their interests and identities with the campus social offerings.
