On 20 July they left together for Germany. * * * From London they sailed by steamer to Antwerp; thence they proceeded to Brussels (mindful of Villette) and on to Cologne, where they met Dr Brabant with Strauss. For three months they stayed at Weimar, George collecting material on Goethe. One of the most friendly of the many people who welcomed them was Liszt. For the first time in her life, Marian saw real inspiration as she watched him play one of his own compositions; he had that laideur divinisee which was her 'favourite kind of physique'.
Marian showed greater interest in dress, and George bought her jewellery; but, asj. W. ' Her talk was 'always most enjoyable a deux. It was not produced for effect ... ' In May 1873 she and George were guests at Trinity College, Cambridge; F. W. H. Myers remembered her conversation in the Fellows' Garden on God, immortality, and duty; and her pronouncement that the first was inconceivable, the second unbelievable, the third peremptory and absolute. A visit to Balliol College, Oxford, followed in June, after which they travelled in France and Germany again.
She disliked the city and its thick fog, but two days of rambling and driving in the country around Dorking made her feel 'a new creature'. She made good progress with Silas Marner, and finished it early in March. Eight weeks later she was in Florence, after a delightful journey from Paris. The historian had taken command over the novelist, and George was continually required to help with her researches in the Magliabecchian Library. A curious mixture of tiredness and determination characterizes the note written in her journal soon after returning home on 14 June: This morning for the first time I feel myself quietly settled at home.
